Burning Man Capes. Half Plaid Flannels.Here is our latest technique for distressing shorts. David has gotten very good at it. He has a wire brush on his drill, and has a vacuum attached to suck up the dust. DON'T BREAK THE WHITE THREADS. That's the most important thing you have to remember.<br />
<br />
Break the blue threads by stretching a pulling. Then wash the shorts for 2-4 hours to remove the broken threads.<br />

I wanted to add these capes that Irene and her roommate Annie made to wear to Burning Man. The girls bought white silk velvet and dyed it these amazing colors for capes. I helped with the finishing touches. It turned out they were a little fancy for Burning Man, but pretty cool none the less.</div>

The thing about overdyed rugs is that the colors are so vivid and fun. They add a lot of flair to a room.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First we found some rugs at various flea markets. This was one of the more challenging steps, because there are lots of expensive vintage carpets out there. But not that many reasonable ones that also have a good shape and pattern. This one is really pretty. The flowers are great.<br />

These two are pretty good, but none of them are super high quality, hand woven rugs. But they're not bad.<br />

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first two carpets we dyed, we actually bleached first. But we have come to the conclusion that this isn't necessary, or desirable. One of the carpets we bleached turned out too light, so you couldn't see the pattern through the dye that well. So, with these we went straight to the dying.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This tool makes it really easy. It's a garden sprayer. Just fill with water, some powdered dye, and some vinegar, put the carpet on a tarp outside, and off you go. I've tried many types of dyes, and they all work fine. I don't really have a favorite.</div>

I like spraying different colors around the border and the inside, although the pink one is just pink. In fact, this first pink wasn't dark enough, so I switched to more of a fuschia color. I also like it if there are some different colors applied very closely with the sprayer to make the pattern of the old carpet more obvious. For instance I tried to hit the leave on the pink and blue carpet with some green.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After all the colors are applied, and left to dry for a couple of days, we hang the carpets over a pole between two ladders and really rinse them thoroughly with a hose, and then leave to dry hanging in the sun.</div>

I want a nice medium weight leather that is both soft and sturdy. The color should be rich, and the feel should be buttery. I recently decided that my only hope was to buy a hide and cut it myself. <br />
<br />
So I have been scouring Southern California and found some scraps, as well as full hides.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBqcN8_Q0JWW9YDCxhYUGr8E6pgrYWRtPHY7Z_1rsiMLFpYH-M1TKA2I58jiqTRRxQpJzf3_7UjuIGXM53AoxfpO21COofvG9hjiKNjd4TJpqy47CBIjvScVaSnv34BHPqy5LcEKmhEdg/s1600/IMG_3366%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBqcN8_Q0JWW9YDCxhYUGr8E6pgrYWRtPHY7Z_1rsiMLFpYH-M1TKA2I58jiqTRRxQpJzf3_7UjuIGXM53AoxfpO21COofvG9hjiKNjd4TJpqy47CBIjvScVaSnv34BHPqy5LcEKmhEdg/s1600/IMG_3366%5B1%5D.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtrPbmXy1s1G3YStdayBca_manoOgOjjE1G2GLW4GcPq4KrCeIDMTAVCrOGcq-3Q0Zs2Ox_EfjW2P5u-E4LOhMnKAYdb1lr2SviFmQrgZDtMby3uDtvnnK1bLph7Q1WGtU8Vbt95s-Z2s/s1600/IMG_3374%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtrPbmXy1s1G3YStdayBca_manoOgOjjE1G2GLW4GcPq4KrCeIDMTAVCrOGcq-3Q0Zs2Ox_EfjW2P5u-E4LOhMnKAYdb1lr2SviFmQrgZDtMby3uDtvnnK1bLph7Q1WGtU8Vbt95s-Z2s/s1600/IMG_3374%5B1%5D.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
At first I made the mistake of buying leather that was nice and soft, but too thin. But the heavier leather can look too much like a shoelace when it's cut.<br />
<br />
I have been cutting it with a regular circular cutter and a self healing mat, which works surprisingly well.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhMQZ_SXzE-TrFQb8cIunRxxH9jX64VM5QyAKi_RVq3nFWO4-gfnRmjqNKYbrHK4YoapgZM6qHSTx8LWC3YqIfKqdv6cjcfcDnLBYII4BbaddfwBs17bJGUOOpbUgC33sAmHgy5eZ_wYE/s1600/IMG_3373%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhMQZ_SXzE-TrFQb8cIunRxxH9jX64VM5QyAKi_RVq3nFWO4-gfnRmjqNKYbrHK4YoapgZM6qHSTx8LWC3YqIfKqdv6cjcfcDnLBYII4BbaddfwBs17bJGUOOpbUgC33sAmHgy5eZ_wYE/s1600/IMG_3373%5B1%5D.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided to make lemonade out of lemons, and use the soft thin leather to make tassels. I LOVE tassels. I have been scouring the internet nightly for cool tassels made out of anything: chain, pearls, leather, silver. So here is my attempt at making some out of the nice soft leather hide I bought at Save More Leather in Los Angeles.<br />

<br />
<br />
The first one has a very nice sterling toggle clasp. The second one has piece of turquoise and an old African trade bead. I am going to attach them to necklaces made of hishi beads, wood beads, and leather.<br />
<br />
Finally, here is a small sample of the vintage charms I have collected and turned into necklaces. The first one uses some of the leather I cut. The last picture is some pre-cut leather I just found that's actually pretty nice. Sigh.<br />

It turns out that those decades old t-shirts that your husband should have thrown out a long time ago are in. The more threadbare and worn the better. It took me a while to come to grips with this, but now I like it. In fact, I just got this t-shirt for myself:<br />

<br />
I believe this was washed for many hours in a Los Angeles wash house, and then silk screened. But it started out as someone's undershirt. <br />
<br />
David and I have been learning about distressing jeans and have discovered that there are places that will wash things for hours and hours and will also dye them, which is a way of fast-forwarding the aging process on t-shirts and denim. Something about it is very appealing. I love the old tags in the neck, especially if they are from some old manufacturer from the 50s or 60s.<br />
<br />
I also picked up this old sweatshirt at a flea market, that is now one of my favorites.<br />

You can take new t-shirts and use sand paper and the sanitize setting on your washing machine, or you can search for a long time and find the perfectly aged and naturally-distressed item at a flea market or at a thrift store. I like them both.<br />
<br />
The old style sweatshirts often had the raglan sleeves set in. I especially love hoodies, but pullovers are good, too.<br />

I also love dyed garments. The colors come out so vividly. There's just something about a home-dyed garment that says it's special. The black one above was dyed in a wash house. I have some more things I will post that I have been dying , too.</div>
<br />
Lastly, I have been collecting vintage t-shirts and have been experimenting with how to cut them to make them into tank tops. I am still working on the details, like how low to cut the arm holes, and whether or not to put darts in. So far each one has been different. I have some lace t-backs that I bought in downtown LA that I will try to add to the backs as well. This is a big project I will try to finish before summer.<br />

We sold many many denim cutoff shorts last summer, and this summer the trend will probably continue. <br />
<br />
The best denim (vintage) is soft and warn. I am a big fan of distressing. If the jeans are really old they have naturally distressed patches, such as knees, hips and elbows. It took me a while to appreciate them, but I am now a fan of holes, and aged stains that just can't be bleached out. A t-shirt worn by a mechanic or painter with the oil stains and paint still apparent is just fun. Add a name tag, an old tag in the collar, especially if it's hand made by Peggy or sold be Sears or Penney's, and I am sold. <br />
<br />
David and I have been working on techniques for distressing shorts that look like the jeans have been worn and washed for years. David tried a drill with sandpaper, and a drummel, but these are my favorite tools:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhc1j9sWEZq_mPdSJyDSjY6vtYdd8RvGFYNFi2ZTj7bSiMO1-2e26-DXbTvO93PU61SJMjFEKHtIj6P6M8YRmE7eI4ZPVQqMz1bQzC8kGalEjk_tbH4cMEJcU0jEyQnqIqSR1TkVtebgc/s1600/IMG_3219.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhc1j9sWEZq_mPdSJyDSjY6vtYdd8RvGFYNFi2ZTj7bSiMO1-2e26-DXbTvO93PU61SJMjFEKHtIj6P6M8YRmE7eI4ZPVQqMz1bQzC8kGalEjk_tbH4cMEJcU0jEyQnqIqSR1TkVtebgc/s1600/IMG_3219.JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
This is a piece of pvc pipe, some sandpaper wrapped around a paint stick, and a bottle of wine. That's all you need.<br />
<br />
So, you stick the pvc pipe in the leg of the jeans, and start sanding. The most important thing to remember is DON'T BREAK THE WHITE THREADS. You want to sand across the leg of the jeans to break the blue threads, and keep the white threads intact. I use my fingers to pull the threads apart to further break the blue threads. After a bit of sanding I throw the jeans in the washer for 2-4 hours. This washes out the broken blue threads, and softens the jeans up even more.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the jeans we sell. First, the cutoff shorts. These are hugely popular, and we carry tons of them. It's hard to keep them in stock because certain sizes are really popular and they're hard to find.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We also sell redline Levis, which are somewhat rare. They are from the 70's and are called redline because the inside seam is cut on the selvedge (the edge of the fabric) and they have a distinctive inner seam that has a red stitch in the white border. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Redline jeans are costlier than other jeans that have an overlock seam, because they use more fabric, and are no longer made in large production. New selvedge jeans are really pricey, but look great.</div>

The show was going to take place last October, but black mold was discovered in the theater, so they had to postpone while cleanup was done. So of course they are doing a song about it, Blackmold, to the tune of Blackbird, by the Beatles.<br />

Here's the mold:<br />

I also made another pair of goat pants, and blinged a bunch of ruby slippers for the goats, who sing and dance to the tune of "If I Only Had a Heart" ("If I Only Didn't Fart").<br />

Lastly, I am dying some vintage flannel shirts for Twig. This one will have an ombre effect. It's interesting how green separates into purple as the dye creeps up the shirt. <br />

David and I have learned a lot from the retail business during this time, as well as life, art, people, the economy, and business in general. The best part has been meeting a lot of interesting people--many of whom come into the store from nearby and faraway places, and many of whom we meet at trade shows, antique stores, flea markets, showrooms etc. I especially have loved meeting the really creative people who I didn't know existed until we started this thing. There are thousands of people in the area collecting crazy old stuff, and sometimes making something new out of it, as well as people who make jewelry, candles, signs, t-shirts, decoupage, paper things, silk screening, letterpress, ceramics, oragami and more. I absolutely love this part. There are so many people that I have met that inspire me. I was going to list them, but it's impossible.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There have been a couple of things that David and I made earlier this year that I want to add to this blog, too. We have been helping to make costumes and props for No Square Theater for several years. This is a skirt that Hannah, our piano teacher's daughter wore for "Lucky Stiff." It's a roulette wheel skirt that she wore for a casino number.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9JiXDPffcjHPcE4SYHGUYZr9wMz9VLKfg6EGfGTQNnbBhRRC-ib6-MVIKsRyNmBP2shLCIhzLbNu3j5K3g6sRm19ylrPPBZQQnuUZ3LHU_iNXb0GuUzOBOdNFrse-Ka32Az398vB5hyphenhyphenE/s1600/IMG_2254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9JiXDPffcjHPcE4SYHGUYZr9wMz9VLKfg6EGfGTQNnbBhRRC-ib6-MVIKsRyNmBP2shLCIhzLbNu3j5K3g6sRm19ylrPPBZQQnuUZ3LHU_iNXb0GuUzOBOdNFrse-Ka32Az398vB5hyphenhyphenE/s400/IMG_2254.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the same number a cast member dressed like the painting of Mona Lisa. We cut out holes for her face and hands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNQDSXtx6sNEKMnxaAIZ0QTV7h7HE8i-SqjU1eKr5MkutGanioW_enndMDTnsYRfZcmPDM8FKu4dfWqpT8Po7jez5lZmQQpw7BzQVTTfwE1E7Lm3tB3YbiZDfBYLZ0QCWxkiN-qouukJ8/s1600/IMG_2266.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNQDSXtx6sNEKMnxaAIZ0QTV7h7HE8i-SqjU1eKr5MkutGanioW_enndMDTnsYRfZcmPDM8FKu4dfWqpT8Po7jez5lZmQQpw7BzQVTTfwE1E7Lm3tB3YbiZDfBYLZ0QCWxkiN-qouukJ8/s400/IMG_2266.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then there were the things we made for "Lagunatics" which was scheduled to take place in October, but had to be postponed due to mold found in the theater. It has been re-scheduled for January. There is one number where the performers sing about the San Onofre power plant, which was taken offline years ago, but still can be seen when driving down PCH. We made the replicas out of chicken wire and paper mache.</div>

Lastly we made these head pieces that get worn again and again in various numbers about traffic, parking, etc that always seems to be a topic in Lagunatics. The hole is for the character's face.</div>

My friend Martha has be teaching me what to look for, where to find it, how to clean it, etc. She also recently bought me several hundred pieces that I will sell at Twig.<br />
<br />
Here is as sample. And these are just the serving forks!<br />
<br />

Except they were. Remember big hair and shoulder pads?...yikes. I have been collecting dresses from flea markets and updating them by throwing away the shoulder pads (far far away), making them shorter, and cutting out the backs in some cases. Then, I remembered I had the centers from the lace vintage skirts, which I turned into HEARTS, and appliqued to the backs of the 80's dresses. Turned out pretty cute, and I sold them both in no time.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Recently, Laguna Beach High School did and amazing production of "Hello Dolly." David and I were called upon to make a FAKE TURKEY for a funny scene in a restaurant. David got out the chicken wire, and I got out the newspaper, glue, and acrylic paint, and this is what we came up with.<br />

Finally, I had this circa 1970's stretchy knit fabric with a fun, colorful print, that I made into this pull on skirt. I LOVE it. It's so retro. You don't see fabric like this anymore.<br />

I re-made some goat horns for Lagunatics (a local show that's a musical spoof about our town) and I dyed some shorts. <br />

I decided to try another carpet, and this one was huge. I think it was about 9'x13' and I am pretty sure it's wool. David told me it was nuts to do this, because of the work involved and the possibility of the results being disastrous. Well, it was a ton of work, but it actually turned out pretty well. Too bad about the lawn though, which unfortunately has died.<br />

It's sort of like something you'd see at Anthropologie, except two people spent about a month making it. Originally it came from my sister Kathy, and it was pretty beat up with no upholstery. Just a shell. I think it was my mom's before that. David cut wood for the seat and back, and I covered it with foam and the needlepoint and old Mexican blankets. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVxi9jcnJyLp93PD2x4X6ng5KIvHdicEsFhdpdENuuOTKdOdPKEjJ1fQWzTpiBIeX-HwxtKKywZgVIrsalfViIKm514lF9aFbLjB4ntAlEJ2fjvhMCDXtRCC4pB6jhschS_MJ3cwrQiEQ/s1600/photo+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVxi9jcnJyLp93PD2x4X6ng5KIvHdicEsFhdpdENuuOTKdOdPKEjJ1fQWzTpiBIeX-HwxtKKywZgVIrsalfViIKm514lF9aFbLjB4ntAlEJ2fjvhMCDXtRCC4pB6jhschS_MJ3cwrQiEQ/s320/photo+(3).JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We're working on several other chairs. The hard part is finding the right fabric, which is CRUCIAL. Bad fabric means bad chair. I am on the hunt for some 50s fun stuff right now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm also working on dying a couple more rugs. This one belongs to a friend of a friend. She didn't like the color, and she like the other rug I dyed, so I am doing this one for her. It's huge. It's also wool instead of silk, so that could change things a lot. We decided to go with indigo blue and emerald green, so it should be interesting. Notice how the lawn is dead in the back yard...that's the only way this kind of thing can be done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZlXLSTSq7cKr5bce4DpYYsUt-8X9El8-a4-8JcvGSPVk1CX4vYftACzonj_Sygz-aQ5r3XZ0xSLBQHf-5hshw0Lb7VBwanUkH0U_pR7c_YD4CC5zraKLGRh6YZ8teY9kDuCbx_ZgI5QA/s1600/Beige+carpet.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZlXLSTSq7cKr5bce4DpYYsUt-8X9El8-a4-8JcvGSPVk1CX4vYftACzonj_Sygz-aQ5r3XZ0xSLBQHf-5hshw0Lb7VBwanUkH0U_pR7c_YD4CC5zraKLGRh6YZ8teY9kDuCbx_ZgI5QA/s320/Beige+carpet.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally, in this last paragraph I am going to do some philosophising. For the last last 4 months we have had a gift shop. Much of what is in the shop we have either made, found, fixed, or a combination of the above, and it's been a lot of fun. Some things have worked out really well, like the chairs and the dyed carpet and the boho jewelry, and some haven't worked out well, like the big, colorful 40s-looking jewelry. I definitely want to make more of the things that are popular, so I am adapting. What has really been fun has been learning that all these random skills that I have acquired over this lifetime have all come together to do these things. I learned how to dye and sew and staple and glue from making costumes over the years. And it has all come together to make this stuff that we are selling at Twig. I have even become somewhat of a lamp person--with a lot of help. I have learned a lot from Mickey, our "lamp guy" and from David, who successfully fixed an old switch on a very cool lamp. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I watched a movie about Charles Eames on Netflix, which is where I got the quote, "Eventually, everything connects." That's exactly what I have been realizing lately. You just keep trying things, learning things, making things, and after about 50 or so years it ALL CONNECTS. Too bad it has to take so long, and maybe for other people they will get there quicker.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was also going to write about how you have to persevere when it seems like a lot of things are dragging you down, but meh, maybe another day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
So, I google around to find out what kind of machine would go through heavy fabric, and I kept reading about the Pfaff 130, which is a 50+ year old machine. Perfect! I don't care about fancy stitches or anything. I just want to go straight, zig-zag, but most importantly go through THICK fabric. The Pfaff 130 uses a large needle and has a 1.3 amp motor. <br />
<br />
I got this one off of Ebay, and had it cleaned at AAA Sewing and Vacuum. After a few glitches, like trying to figure out how to thread it, and adjust the tension it took off like a champ. Almost too fast. This machine flies. And it purrs like a kitten at the same time. Then it stopped! It just stopped in the middle of a jacket I was sewing. (I'm making a double breasted jacket look like an Austrian jacket for Sound of Music.) I took the machine back to AAA, and apparently the way to fix a machine like this is you put it in the car, drive 10-15 miles, take it out of the car to show the sewing machine guy--and then it magically works again.)<br />
<br />
Here's the machine<br />
<br />

It's taken this long (2 months) to build inventory and rearrange the store to the point where it feels like a real store. We have had a lot of people comment that they really like the feel of it. We're adding new things every day: vintage belts and buckles, beautiful hand blown glass, hand woven tablecloths and napkins, screen printed cards, fun t-shirts, vintage items such as pictures, dishes, and...coming soon...some mid century chairs that David and I have restored to their former glory.<br />
<br />
Here's the front of the store right now. It changes constantly, thanks to Barbara Pierce, who is amazing at merchandising and arranging.<br />

Johanna and Martha bossed me around all day to get the place organized and ready. It's looking pretty good.<br />
<br />
We also had tons of help from Mike, David, Kathy, Irene (Nicola's mom), Laurie, Tiana and Torii. Thanks to all for folding t-shirts, tagging things, painting, nailing, moving, assembling, dis-assembling, photoshopping, etc etc.<br />
<br />
Also, thanks to Genny and Mandy and Johanna for this awesome ad:<br />

<br />
What was I thinking?<br />
<br />
The house is over-flowing with merchandise. I sure hope people still have a lot more Christmas shopping to do, because we have gifts. And cards. And Christmas ornaments. And fun books. And jewelry. And a boatload of very cool t-shirts. All we have to do is tag 'em, carry everything over, set it all up, open the doors, and see who walks in.<br />
<br />
What could possibly go wrong.<br />
<br />
I just started a Facebook page, and I am working on the website. <br />
<br />
Here's what it looks like inside:<br />
<br />

It's so much fun. I get to make really big sparkly over-the-top things and people want them and go ooh aah and I get to see them on stage. That's the good part. The bad part is looking for the right pair of shoes at the Goodwill for someone, or making ten indentical tunics, and even that's not so bad.<br />
<br />
I also got hooked up with No Square Theater - Lagunatics, which is a local theater group that does a summer show and a spoof about Laguna Beach in the fall. I did Rocky Horror Picture Show for them, and a bunch of other things that involved goat costumes, aliens, nude statues, elephants, a rhinocerous, etc.<br />
<br />
Turns out my husband David is REALLY GOOD at making props, too. He made a magic mirror for Beauty and the Beast, a dead deer for A Lie of the Mind, and now he is working on a magic cane.<br />
<br />
Here's a club he made out of a stick and foam. It's going to be used by Jack in the Beanstock to kill the giant.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPu2wuuw8SuOuzlnBY9LQE6GLxuJoebhd5hQHIXoCOznweMExmkz33IWap62lO0XFRFvEjtwJsWerY1n-0C2sZoie01PMQGbc3Uh7U_ceaqY3FwQMWe22ZSUAf1Veh1Y-qC0ZZacdEjUk/s1600/IMG_7378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPu2wuuw8SuOuzlnBY9LQE6GLxuJoebhd5hQHIXoCOznweMExmkz33IWap62lO0XFRFvEjtwJsWerY1n-0C2sZoie01PMQGbc3Uh7U_ceaqY3FwQMWe22ZSUAf1Veh1Y-qC0ZZacdEjUk/s400/IMG_7378.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />

And here's a dress that Cinderella will wear to the ball. I added the sleeves and blinged it up. This dress started out being a quincanera dress that someone donated to the high school, and when our daughter's friend Genny saw it on the floor she said, "Hey, that's my old dress! I sold it to someone at a garage sale." I guess this is a really small town.<br />

As I was cleaning out my desk I came across a post-it with two adages that I had written down for some reason, which I will share.<br />
<br />
One is Muphry's law, that says "if you write anything criticizing editing or proofreading there will be a fault of some kind in what you have written". This is a play on Murphy's law, of course.<br />
<br />
The other one was Sturgeon's law, that reads "ninety percent of everything is crap". <br />
<br />
So, I was thinking about this ninety percent rule, and I'm not sure about the exact ratio, but there certainly is a lot of crap out there, something I am really going to try to avoid having in our store. We'll see how that works out, but that's the plan. <br />
<br />
In that light, I want to sing the praises of these bags we are going to carry. Each is hand made, has incredible detail, and is definitely the opposite of crap. I love just looking at the amazing work by this woman who makes them. They come from company called Totem, and it's basically this one woman making these bags. I keep trying to buy more from her, but you can only get a couple at a time.<br />
<br />
Here they are against the cinderblock wall in the store, which has since been sandblasted.<br />
<br />

This was such a great find at the Santa Monica flea market. I came across a booth where a woman was selling bags of rayon from the 40's and they were just beautiful. Then, as I was pawing through the fabric, I realized that I recognized the fabric, because I owned a dress made from one piece. It turns out this woman had a shop on Melrose in LA, where she sold these beautiful, handmade dresses. They were REALLY pricey--even the one that I bought which was on sale. Well, she closed her shop, and here was all the fabric! Score! <br />
<br />
I have a lot of ideas but right now I am in the process of making some things for a local play called Lagunatics. I'm making a hat like the one Beatrice wore to the royal wedding for a drag queen number. Photos coming when I finish.Twig of Lagunahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09133900640825741608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3721763865524034119.post-50344355976762475782011-09-13T22:52:00.000-07:002011-09-14T20:24:31.723-07:00Fabric and bias tape<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6ghCsGY5Xu3Z5HiOfryffKXqc6ewD3ZQZLTsbFrwesD1QvIA3QwKKPq_vtK-EFxXl-PttxpJ0w3BVDAYZ3oupoe3-yLvzxKt3v-RK7ebEMsdWjZy8xSXmPatwquabEi1GKO-qIttVGTA/s1600/fabric2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6ghCsGY5Xu3Z5HiOfryffKXqc6ewD3ZQZLTsbFrwesD1QvIA3QwKKPq_vtK-EFxXl-PttxpJ0w3BVDAYZ3oupoe3-yLvzxKt3v-RK7ebEMsdWjZy8xSXmPatwquabEi1GKO-qIttVGTA/s400/fabric2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I have been on a fabric jag for a while. Especially vintage rayon from the 40s. Then I realized that 50s cotton is so pretty, and even 80s big flowery prints are fun. So I have a whole assortment of fabric that eventually I am going to make a bunch of things out of, like skirts, tops, dresses, you name it. <br />
<br />
Then, I had to start collecting vintage patterns to go with the vintage fabric. I even found a pattern on Ebay that my sister Kathy and I both sewed in the 70s.<br />
<br />
Finally, I got a ton of bias tape, because I like the colors, and also because it's easier than cutting out facing. <br />
<br />
Why is it so much more fun to buy the patterns and fabric than it is to sew? I guess that's how I ended up with so much beautiful untouched fabric. Even if I don't sew it all, I just like LOOKING at it, and folding and re-folding it. They just don't make stuff like this anymore.<br />
<br />
So far I have made several dresses and skirts, but they are all summery, so I will have to wait till Fall and Winter are over to bring them out.Twig of Lagunahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09133900640825741608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3721763865524034119.post-54037008344040242942011-09-10T22:58:00.000-07:002011-09-13T22:52:41.507-07:00Homage to Coco Chanel<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcmNAB4uT5Oxn7_tSjTEBcOGG1gXiufPV-8WH3ngjUyPBsoHXu7qpZqEX0z0h0GF7zplk9id6txtoKoT6LIiTkMEvqjsEBdQ2sYtkFo6DqzRE9I1CKsFwHr1Ib3RYhYgQbfQUK8er1918/s1600/Coco+jewelry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcmNAB4uT5Oxn7_tSjTEBcOGG1gXiufPV-8WH3ngjUyPBsoHXu7qpZqEX0z0h0GF7zplk9id6txtoKoT6LIiTkMEvqjsEBdQ2sYtkFo6DqzRE9I1CKsFwHr1Ib3RYhYgQbfQUK8er1918/s640/Coco+jewelry.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

You'll never guess what this is. It may look like an old door, but it's actually a card rack (minus the paint for the stand, and the acrylic J-trays that will be screwed on at the end. David is busy making the stands out of plywood in the garage, then we'll paint them a matching color, and I am going to make sand bags out of vintage fabric to make them more stable. I am pretty sure we are the first people to do this. I could be wrong, but it seems likely. So, if you see these somewhere else in a couple years, you know the idea started right here.<br />
<br />
We actually have 3 of these old doors, and the other 2 are cooler. One has glass panes and a brass backplate with a glass doorknob, and the other has a curved top and multiple colors of paint showing.<br />
<br />
I've been working on fixing this necklace I got at a flea market, that was broken in several places. I replaced the string with silk string and just sort of fixed it up. It's pretty cute.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We also got some things from a guy going out of business (old wood salvage) in Orange. The place was pretty interesting, filled with old wood precariously stored on two levels in a rickety old building. We got a bench, an old milk crate, and a gate. I think we're going to make a table out of the gate, because it's a nice color, and nice old wood (tongue and groove).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I waxed both the bench and the gate 3 times already, and I think I am going to add a few more coats. It really makes a nice finish. In fact, I think I am going to try the wax out on the old antique door in front of the store.Twig of Lagunahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09133900640825741608noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3721763865524034119.post-78226615444610308182011-09-03T22:39:00.000-07:002011-09-13T23:04:18.195-07:00See you soon at TwigMy husband David and I are in the process of remodeling our shop at 1175 South Coast Highway in Laguna Beach. For locals, it's the old Asian Antique shop right next door to the Sandpiper. If you go way back, it was originally built for the United Lodge of Theosophists, back in the 60s. Turns out it was designed by an interesting architect at the time--Gregory Ains. Ains worked for Richard Neutra, a well-known modern architect, in the 50s. It's not a fancy building at all, just cinderblock and concrete, but the one interesting design feature is a room with a pyramid ceiling, and a skylight in the middle of the pyramid. It's pretty cool. We're going to remove the paint on the cinderblocks, drywall the ceiling, sand the floors, and pretty much leave it very simple.<br />
<br />
Then we're going to fill it with gifts to sell.<br />
<br />
Now, I have never sold gifts before. Neither has David. In fact, neither of us have ever worked in retail, unless you count the vegetable market (me) and McDonalds (David) where we worked way way back before college. However, I have read the book "Retail for Dummies" from cover to cover, so what go wrong?<br />
<br />
Also, I like to shop, especially for vintage things. In fact, I go to flea markets whenever we travel. I have a tole lamp hanging in the bathroom that I carried home from a flea market in Paris, and every time I visited my daughter at school in Boston, I would go to the flea markets there (the best!). Now our son is in college in Pennsylvania which has awesome flea markets, yeah! <br />
<br />
But not everything in the store is vintage. But even the new things harken back to days gone by. I really love jewlery from the 40s (and jewelry in general) so there will be lots of that. Also, lots of lamps (tole!) and some industrial age lamps that remind one of Jules Verne. The cards, tshirts, books, pottery, etc all have some element from the past, particularly the 40s and 50s. And the colors look like Bauer pottery--aqua, pale green, creamy yellow, that type of thing.<br />
<br />
Here's some idea of what we're talking about:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbRFe4wSHXRM1S-IjaVHbiFKGRHw_M1zv3zhbJDwCN_n7bwb7vKYJpTYtc9zEHtVmgeSscSRk2u8UwOvYZ-KzYcF81dawJ4Rt12Q8gHGsH64t-HQWAXd7jF6V8RjhirXVgJ6rrb-b54I8/s1600/rug.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbRFe4wSHXRM1S-IjaVHbiFKGRHw_M1zv3zhbJDwCN_n7bwb7vKYJpTYtc9zEHtVmgeSscSRk2u8UwOvYZ-KzYcF81dawJ4Rt12Q8gHGsH64t-HQWAXd7jF6V8RjhirXVgJ6rrb-b54I8/s400/rug.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And this:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd3KViaSiYFB5PNvwMpBd5YmghVF70wHdra4rpQVdzT9ig0xmTOZTdU9OWEfjI5pi0PuMaEsGIERLKjKMl7ngCXLTRa-zo5BDOKzf511OZYDIg7Q6UgQnyRcXKE005hg1JZ6-6DvdpIkI/s1600/flamingo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd3KViaSiYFB5PNvwMpBd5YmghVF70wHdra4rpQVdzT9ig0xmTOZTdU9OWEfjI5pi0PuMaEsGIERLKjKMl7ngCXLTRa-zo5BDOKzf511OZYDIg7Q6UgQnyRcXKE005hg1JZ6-6DvdpIkI/s640/flamingo.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd3KViaSiYFB5PNvwMpBd5YmghVF70wHdra4rpQVdzT9ig0xmTOZTdU9OWEfjI5pi0PuMaEsGIERLKjKMl7ngCXLTRa-zo5BDOKzf511OZYDIg7Q6UgQnyRcXKE005hg1JZ6-6DvdpIkI/s1600/flamingo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><div style="text-align: left;"> </div></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We've also been to gifts shows, and I have been poring over catalogs and websites, looking for things that will amuse and amaze. For instance, I found the candles I think we will carry, simply by googling "What is the best scented candle?" I got a few that I am trying out, to see if the reviews are right.</div><br />
We probably have a month or so of renovation, so we're looking at September/October to open. I am really excited about this. David says that it has always been his dream not to have a giftshop, so that's a bummer for him. (He's kidding...sort of.) But he has been very supportive and is even sawing and sanding stuff in the garage that we'll use as fixtures. I think he's having fun, and I am for sure.<br />
<br />
More to come...Twig of Lagunahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09133900640825741608noreply@blogger.com4
